National Park Week Kicks Off Saturday, April 19th

Saturday, April 19, kicks off National Park Week across the National Park System (NPS) in the United States. On 4/19, all park entrance fees will be waived at 429 sites within the National Park System, ranging from national battlefields to seashores. However, camping, overnight wilderness backpacking, and all other administrative fees will remain in effect.

The first National Park Week marked the 75th anniversary of the National Park Service in 1991, a significant milestone in the preservation and enjoyment of the country’s natural and cultural heritage. In 1994, under presidential direction, the week-long celebration of our national parks system became an annual occurrence.

Amidst these uncertain times for the NPS, there are glimmers of hope. Despite the reported layoffs, the current administration has granted permission for the system to hire 7,700 seasonal positions. This is a significant increase from the reported three-year average, signaling a potential boost for the NPS workforce.

As we look ahead to National Park Week, it’s important to acknowledge the uncertainty that shrouds the NPS. The recent layoffs, amid a steady increase in annual visitors, raise questions about the future of our national parks and the quality of our tourism experience.

As the parks prepare to celebrate National Park Week which coincides with Earth Day on April 22, they will also promote their junior ranger program. This program offers a fun and educational experience for kids to learn about nature and conservation.
